Saturday, December 13th was the next best thing since sliced bread! Altoona held a Halo Tournament at the Altoona Regional. 36 DeMolay's were split into 9 teams for an extreme round-robin tournament. The tournament was intense and all the guys did there best, but there was only 1 winner. Team 1 was victorious over the 8 remaining teams.

The winners from Team 1 were:
Mitch Martineau - James A. Guest
Brandon Stone - Champlin
Joe Wright - Southgate
Ryan Anderson - Champlin.

The MVP for the day was Pat Doubet of Cedar Rapids Chapter. If you missed out, don't forget about the Cedar Falls Regional/Lock-in this Saturday, December 20-21. See you there.

Iowa DeMolay has the opportunity of a lifetime and you are the key to its success. This year in Iowa DeMolay has brought a special opportunity to break the previous record for membership. To break this record would be huge accomplishment and would be really cool because you would also be beating Shane Harshbarger and Matt Buckley's 1992-1993 record that was set well over ten years ago. The best part is that all you have to do is initiate people before the new year. This is pretty easy, so get after it and initiate. Remember, it is better to try and fail than not try and and not being able to succeed.

Posted by Kyle Martin

The All Star Ritual Tournament is a major component of the very famous All Star Weekend. It's a chance for you and your chapter to show off your speaking skills and ability to execute to the fullest. You may think you're hot stuff now but there are a few things you ought to know before you walk into a room full of judges with pen in hand. They will be looking for every flaw in the words you say, the gestures you give, and the floorwork you do. Don't let it scare you though. With the tips below, you'll be well on your way to the winner's circle at the podium on February 8th(Sunday morning of All Star).

Before the competition:

  1. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
  2. Consult the Iowa DeMolay Ritual Handbook which holds all the rules and lays every requirement out for every part(your chapter has one somewhere)Some parts may have slight differences in what you already know. ex: MC has an extra welcome line in Chapter Proficiency. Councilors parts have to do opening/closing and initiatory degree parts. Chaplain has to do opening/closing and nine'o'clock interpolation prayers.
  3. Repeat your part when your walking to school or on a trip in the car or instead of playing video games for an hour.
  4. Do it in front of a mirror.
  5. Practice with your team frequently.
  6. Try saying it in a variety of styles to find what sounds best.
  7. Register your team competition with your event registration to ensure your team a time to compete.
  8. Competition is judged based on two categories:
    Words: be accurate
Performace: you can get some bonus points here with you're tone, pace, appearance, etc.
  9. Dress up for the occasion. It's guaranteed points if you do.
  10. Have as many competitors from your chapter compete. The more that compete, the better your chances are at getting the Shane-height Ritual Supremacy Trophy.

During the competition:

  1. Thank your judges before and after you compete (it won't help your score but they do work hard with only donuts as payment).
  2. take a few deep breaths, stretch your jaw, do warm ups if you want and shake out the bad vibes before saying "START".
  3. If you screw up, stay composed!!!!
  4. If you forget mid-sentence and there is no chance of finding your place, skip ahead to a word you do know. Chances are the words you skip will be less costly than the prompt you might have to take.
  5. If you get stuck, don't repeat what you've already said. It'll end up costing you more than if you skip ahead a little.
  6. Don't rush. If you think you're going to slow, you're probably going the perfect pace.
  7. Don't say "WHOOOOWHEEE, THANK GOD I"M DONE, HOLY COW" until you say "STOP"

The ritual competition is required for the Chapter Of Excellence so this is not something to put off until you get there. Start holding practices and get your teams together now. I'll see you February 7,8 in the Quad Cities at ALL STAR!!!!!
