Installation at Altoona
|
Posted by Kyle Martin
I recently had the opportunity to be a part of Altoona Chapter's Installation
of Officers on October 5th in Altoona. Among the guests present were parents,
Masons from Altoona's sponsoring body, King David Lodge, as well as members
of other local lodges who came to see Altoona's first installation in several
years.
Chapter Chairman Don Sardeson kicked things off with a warm welcome as the
State Officers and Cyclone Chapter Master Councilor Ryan Knight took their
installing stations. Before concluding the ceremonies, Altoona Master
Councilor Bryant Lester made nice remarks about his term plan and
introductions of his guests and dignitaries. Dad BJ Fairchild presented Senior
Councilor Tyler Palmer with his Founders Membership Award. Brother Lester then
closed the chapter and all retired to the basement for refreshments and games.
Altoona's installation came off without a hitch and their next term was
started off with a bang because of it.
Altoona Chapter Dad Jim Roske is not the only advisor out there who knows how
to throw good party, but to make sure that your next installation of officers
is a success, use the resources that you already have. Each chapter should
have a chapter activity guide. It contains everything from Installations to
Dances to Prospect Parties. It tells you step by step everything that needs to
get done in order to maximize the success of your next event.

Fellowship of the Crown
|
Posted by Matt Risberg
Fellowship of the Crown is the new fall membership drive put on by
DeMolay International. It runs from October 1 to November 15th of this
year. It is a great idea, especially because the prizes are awarded to each
region. THe different prizes that are given out are podium drapes in five
different colors for each number of new members brought in by a CHAPTER.
For the fisrt four members brought in the chapter recieves a white drape,
eight will get you a red drape and 12 will get you a blue drape, 20 new
members will get you purple and 24 will get you a gold podium drape. Then
the INDIVIDUAL prizes is a DeMolay Membership ring for the person who first
line signs the most new members in our disrict.
A member from the Iowa jurisdiction should win this for our region due to
the fact that all the other states in our region have less then half of our
total new members this year combined. It will be easy for someone in Iowa
to get it all you are doing is competing against your friends in Iowa
DeMolay and so a resonible number for you to shoot for is eight to secure
yourself that ring. If you only get four new members you will still get a
free T-shirt from DeMolay International.

Lock-in/Prospect Party How-To
There have been several lock-ins that I've been to or heard reports about.
Some were really successful, some were not. I hope this short checklist
will help MCs and social event committees plan a successful one.
- Step 1: Pick a date that's at least 3 weeks or a month in advance.
This way, people have time to ask off of work, and change other
plans. No one can attend an overnight on one day's notice.
- Step 2: O.K. this day with your advisory council/chapter dad and make sure
the temple is open.
If your advisory council doesn't approve of the event, there's no way
that anyone will have anyfun... No one likes sitting outside of a temple
doing nothing.
- Step 3: Make a plan of what will be at the lockin.
When a prospect asks what you're going to be doing, there's nothing
that will convince them to come less than your looking like an idiot saying,
"Well, we'll be there... and, um, we'll have stuff to do, and um..." You'll
impress them a lot more if you say "We are going to be having a video game
tournament, a Magic tournament, and Risk, Monopoly, Sorry, and Trouble
boards going throughout the night." This will also ensure that you know
exactly what you need to have at the temple in order for everyone to have
fun.
- Step 4: Invite a friend!
A lock in is no good as a prospect party if you dont' have any
prospects.
- Step 5: Invite another friend.
Even if your first friend can make it, always invite another. You can
count on less than half of all prospects invited to attend, so make sure you
invite more than one or two friends.
- Step 6: Plan food.
If your prospects are well fed, they'll enjoy the party a lot more
than if they're starved and half-dead from hunger.
- Step 7: Arrive early
This way, you can make sure that the building is set up and you
aren't rushing around to make sure that all your ducks are in a row while
the prospects are sitting there bored with nothing to do.
- Step 8: Have fun!
If you have fun, chances are your prospects will have fun, and want
to join that much more.
Ninth and Final step: FOLLOW UP ON EVERY PROSPECT THAT ATTENDED!
Make sure that they know that not only do you have fun at the state
level, there are members only events (Tailgate, All Star, GMC, Summerfest,
and others) that even more people show up, and there's even more fun to be
had, all for a one-time price of $25.
